Beginning students have an opportunity to start piano lessons with no prior experience and advance at their comfort level, adding skills in an structured, cumulative order.
A standard set of beginner books is used, along with selected supplementary materials to increase theory and dexterity skills.
They are encouraged to select solos on their level from a wide variety of styles for eventual performance venues.
Piano lessons for intermediate students use an approach that is much the same as piano lessons for beginners with the addition of scales, chords, key signatures and other aspects of advancing theory.
Although hobbyist playing is also encouraged so that the pressure of advancing music theory is not a deterrent from playing for fun.
Current musical compositions are encouraged due to interests, such as computer game themes, etc.
Advanced repertoire is introduced and skills are fine tuned. Students are encouraged to be individual in their selections and also to participate in performance venues that have the opportunity for critique.
One such venue is through the American Guild of Piano Teachers, which has been in existence since 1929 and has a standard of performance judging by distinguished musicians in the field.
Another is Austin District Music Teachers Association, that offers additional performance venues and theory tests. Preparation to audition for arts magnet high schools is also a possibility.
